MONCTON, NB, Canada - The Coalition Against Abuse in Relationships (CAAR) is celebrating their 20th anniversary this year by holding a one-day conference titled “HELPING CHILDREN THRIVE: Impact on Children Exposed to Domestic Violence” to help professionals recognize and respond to the needs of children who live with domestic violence.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND: Social workers, youth workers, teachers, nurses, psychologists, police officers, daycare workers, women’s shelter workers, and front line workers.
WHEN: April 21st, 2010 – 8:00a.m. to 4:30p.m.
Conference topics include: MORNING - This workshop will help professionals in a variety of front-line positions recognize and respond to the needs of children who live with domestic violence. The material will cover myths and facts about children and domestic violence and also review how violence against a mother can shape children as they grow.
AFTERNOON - This workshop will cover intervention approaches useful for children in different developmental stages, roles children may assume in homes characterized by domestic violence, how domestic violence can affect mothering, and parenting approaches designed for children who have lived with domestic violence.
Participants will be able to attend the morning or afternoon conference or the full day. The conference fee is $30 (half day) & $45 (full day) both with lunch and coffee breaks. Group rates for non-profit organizations are available.
SHORT BIO - Keynote Speaker: Dr. Alison Cunningham Alison is Director of Research and Planning at the Centre for Children and Families in the Justice System in Ontario and also a part-time residential counselor in the shelter program at the Women’s Rural Resource Centre of Strathroy Area. With Linda Baker, she has authored many training resources on the topic of children living with violence against their mothers including Little Eyes, Little Ears: How Violence Against a Mother Shapes Children as they Grow (2007). They also released in 2008 two resources for people who work with abused women: Helping an Abused Woman: 101 Things to Know, Say & Do and Helping Abused Women in Shelters: 101 Things to Know, Say & Do. Alison’s latest training resource is called The Journey to Justice: A Guide to Thinking, Talking and Working as a Team for Young Victims of Crime in Canada’s North which was released in September, 2009.
The Coalition Against Abuse in Relationships believes all men, women and children have the right to live without physical, sexual, economical and emotional abuse. C.A.A.R. is a non-profit organization representing many service providers (www.coalitionagainstabuse.com) whose members work directly or indirectly with victims and/or perpetrators of violence in relationships. Created in 1990, it attempts to improve awareness of and access to services to the victims and/or perpetrators of abuse through public education and lobbying activities.
